About This Service

Respite That Supports the Whole Family

Caring for a loved one is one of the most meaningful things a person can do โ€” but it is also one of the most demanding. Without regular breaks, family carers risk exhaustion, burnout, and deteriorating health of their own. Good respite care is not an indulgence โ€” it is an essential part of a sustainable caring relationship.

At Mother Care East London Ltd, our respite care service provides families with the breathing space they need, safe in the knowledge that their loved one is in the hands of a trained, caring professional. We take over seamlessly โ€” maintaining familiar routines, delivering personal care and medication support, and providing genuine companionship โ€” so that the family carer can rest without worry.

Our respite care is available as planned short breaks, regular scheduled cover, emergency respite, overnight and live-in cover, and extended holiday or hospitalisation cover. We respond quickly and compassionately, at any time.

How We Start

Arranging Respite Care in Four Simple Steps

Whether you are planning ahead or need cover urgently, our process is designed to be straightforward and responsive โ€” getting the right carer in place as quickly as possible.

1

Get in Touch

Call us on 07510 916481 at any time. Tell us about the individual, the current care arrangements, and when and how often you need respite cover. For emergency respite, we respond immediately.

2

Assessment and Handover Plan

For planned respite, we carry out a brief assessment to understand the individual’s needs, routines, preferences, and care plan. For emergency cover, we work from an existing care plan or carry out a rapid verbal handover with the family carer.

3

Carer Matching and Introduction

We match the individual with a trained respite carer whose skills suit their needs. For planned respite, we introduce the carer in advance so the individual is familiar and comfortable before the first solo session.

4

Respite Begins

The respite carer arrives to the agreed schedule and delivers care to the agreed plan. We stay in close contact with the family, share updates, and ensure a smooth handover when the family carer returns.

Common Questions

Respite Care FAQs

How quickly can you provide emergency respite cover?

We aim to mobilise emergency respite cover as quickly as possible โ€” in many cases on the same day or within 24 hours of the call. We ask that you contact us as soon as you know cover is needed. Our team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 07510 916481 to respond to emergency situations.

Will the same carer always come for respite visits?

We always aim to provide a consistent respite carer wherever possible โ€” so that the individual builds familiarity and the family carer can feel confident in the arrangements. For planned respite, we introduce the carer in advance before the first solo session. For emergency respite, consistency may not always be possible at short notice, but we brief any new carer thoroughly before they attend.

What information does the respite carer need before they start?

For planned respite, we carry out an assessment and develop a written care plan covering the individual’s routines, personal care needs, medication, dietary requirements, communication needs, and emergency contacts. For emergency cover, we ask the family carer to provide a verbal handover and share any existing care documentation. The more information we have, the smoother the transition.

Can respite care include taking the person out into the community?

Yes โ€” where this is appropriate for the individual and agreed as part of the respite plan, our carers can accompany the individual to community activities, appointments, walks, or visits. Community access during respite can be a positive and enriching experience for the individual and gives the family carer genuine uninterrupted time at home.

Can respite care be funded through a personal budget or direct payment?

Yes. Respite care can be funded through local authority personal budgets and direct payments, NHS Continuing Healthcare, carer’s assessments, and privately. Many local authorities offer specific carer’s break funding following a carer’s assessment. We can support families in identifying what funding may be available to them.

What happens if the individual is unsettled when the family carer leaves?

It is completely natural for some individuals to feel anxious when their usual carer is absent. Our respite carers are trained to manage this sensitively โ€” using familiar routines, calm reassurance, and engaging activities to help the individual settle. We always communicate with the family carer if we have any concerns, and we never leave an individual in a distressed state without addressing it.
